A new beginning for Milan Bergamo Airport
At Milan Bergamo Airport — the Orio al Serio airport — a true transformation is under way. On 25 November 2025, the new departures terminal was officially opened, following an investment of around €55 million by SACBO. The aim is to bring the airport in line with its growing passenger numbers, while raising standards of comfort and safety.
With this upgrade, Milan Bergamo is preparing to become much more than just an airport. As its senior management has described it, the goal is to create a true “aerotropolis”: an airport integrated into an urban ecosystem, complete with facilities, services, transport links and hospitality.
Security checks 2.0 — faster and stress-free
At the heart of the redevelopment is the new security area: 7,500 square metres on the first floor, with 14 lanes equipped with latest-generation CT scanners. These machines can analyse the contents of hand luggage in 3D, without passengers having to open their bags or remove laptops and other devices. In practical terms, this means:
Liquids, gels and aerosols are now allowed in containers of up to 2 litres each.
Laptops, tablets and other electronic devices can remain inside your bag.
Security times are also significantly reduced thanks to an intelligent system that directs passengers towards the least crowded lanes. The result? More comfort, fewer complications and a smoother boarding experience — a real step up from the old rules, which limited liquids to 100 ml per container and required a clear plastic bag.
New facilities, more capacity and greater efficiency
The upgrade is not limited to security checks. The new terminal also offers:
30 new self check-in kiosks, bringing the total to 64, to make the check-in process faster and easier.
An expanded non-Schengen area, with new boarding gates.
An upgraded baggage handling system (BHS), designed to make baggage sorting quicker and more efficient.
The project — which began in March 2024 — is part of a broader investment plan worth around €300 million, designed to prepare the airport for the future.
What changes for travellers — and why it matters
For frequent travellers, or simply for anyone who values convenience, these new features make flying from Milan Bergamo a very different experience:
No more travel-sized bottles: shampoo, perfume, cleansers and travel cosmetics can now be in “normal” sizes, without drastic limits.
Smoother journeys: less time spent queuing, a more relaxed security experience, and less stress when travelling with electronic devices or liquids.
More flexibility and convenience: ideal for short trips, city breaks or last-minute getaways — perhaps taking off from Bergamo and landing somewhere else just a few hours later.
An airport ready for the future: with its new infrastructure, Bergamo is positioning itself not only as a transit point, but as a modern, efficient and well-connected hub.
A few useful tips for a stress-free departure
Even though the 2-litre rule applies, always check that your flight departs from an area equipped with the upgraded scanners. In some cases, traditional restrictions — such as the 100 ml limit — may still apply elsewhere.
If you are travelling with children or electronic devices, make use of the dedicated lanes or “family / reduced mobility” gates where available, as they are usually more convenient and faster.
Arrive early on busier travel days. Even though security checks are now quicker, passenger numbers can still be high.
