Spectacular beaches and villages overlooking the sea
The Conero Riviera is one of those places that can take your breath away before you even reach the beach. This stretch of coastline is where rocky cliffs plunge towards the sea, Mediterranean vegetation climbs the hillsides, and the Adriatic shimmers in shades ranging from turquoise to emerald green.
Located in the Marche, just a few kilometres from Ancona, it is home to some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in central Italy.
The landscape is quite different from that of traditional seaside resorts. Here, small coves nestled between rocky cliffs, white pebble beaches, lush green walking trails and picturesque villages perched high above the sea create a truly distinctive setting.
From the beaches of the Conero Riviera and spectacular viewpoints to charming historic centres, there is plenty to explore. Sirolo, Numana and Portonovo are just a few of the highlights of a region where nature, tradition and Mediterranean charm come together beautifully.
It's an ideal destination for a weekend getaway or a longer holiday, with endless opportunities to combine relaxing days by the sea, scenic walks, hiking adventures and discovering the flavours of the local cuisine.
Sirolo, an Adriatic gem between sky and sea
Perched on the slopes of Mount Conero, Sirolo is one of the most charming villages along the Marche's Adriatic coast. Its historic centre retains an intimate, welcoming atmosphere, with narrow stone-paved streets, lively little squares, traditional shops and panoramic terraces overlooking the sea.
At the heart of the village lies Piazza Vittorio Veneto, a natural viewing terrace offering spectacular views of the coastline. On clear days, the contrast between the deep blue sea, white cliffs and lush green vegetation creates a particularly breathtaking scene.
One of the loveliest things to do in Sirolo is simply wander through its historic centre, following winding streets past centuries-old buildings, unexpected viewpoints and cosy little restaurants where you can sample traditional specialities from the Marche as sunset approaches. As the light softens, the village comes to life and the surrounding panorama takes centre stage.
It's easy to see why Sirolo is considered one of the most iconic villages of the Conero Riviera, a place where natural beauty and local identity blend together while retaining their authentic character.
Numana, maritime traditions and Adriatic views
Just a short distance from Sirolo, Numana is another essential stop when exploring the Conero Riviera.
The village has retained a strong connection to its maritime heritage, reflected in the narrow streets of its historic centre, its old harbour and its traditional local cuisine.
The upper part of the village, known as Numana Alta, offers some particularly beautiful panoramic views. Among its most distinctive landmarks is the Costarella, a long historic staircase that once connected the town centre to the harbour area and remains one of Numana's most characteristic corners.
Another important landmark is the Arco di Torre, the town's most recognisable historic symbol. Once used as a defensive outpost and lookout, it was built on the ruins of an ancient bell tower or part of the former parish church of San Giovanni, which no longer exists.
Heading down towards the sea, you'll discover La Spiaggiola and nearby Frate Beach, two small, sheltered coves surrounded by the cliffs of the headland, with clear waters and predominantly pebbly seabeds.
Further south, between Numana Bassa and Marcelli, the coastline opens up into wider, well-equipped beaches, particularly suited to visitors looking for beach clubs, restaurants and easily accessible facilities.

Urbani Cave, a bay nestled among the cliffs
At the foot of the Sirolo headland lies one of the most picturesque spots along the coast: Urbani Beach, also known for the beautiful cave that shares its name.
The bay has a distinctive crescent shape, framed by rocky cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation.
When sea and weather conditions are favourable, the water is generally crystal clear, displaying vibrant colours that stand out against the beach's pale pebbles. Its sheltered setting makes it particularly appealing, while beach facilities and a few stretches of free public beach offer different options for visitors.
The rocky seabed and coastal formations also provide interesting opportunities for snorkelling, provided sea conditions and access restrictions are respected. Reached via a road descending from the centre of Sirolo, the beach, cave and surrounding cliffs combine to make this one of the most recognisable stretches of the Conero coastline.

Portonovo, where the mountains meet the sea
The road descending towards Portonovo winds through a landscape dominated by the lush vegetation of Conero Regional Park. Between winding bends and glimpses of the headland, the sea suddenly appears through the trees, offering a first taste of one of the most beautiful natural settings along the Marche's coast.
Portonovo Bay stands out for its strong connection to nature, with pale pebble beaches, crystal-clear waters and Mediterranean scrub creating a landscape that changes with the seasons and the shifting light.
Compared with other destinations along the Riviera, Portonovo offers a more nature-focused experience, thanks to its natural surroundings and the distinctive shape of its coastline.
Yet there is also history to discover. Hidden among the greenery stands the Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo, an elegant example of Romanesque architecture that adds a fascinating cultural dimension to a visit to the bay.
At the far end of the bay lies one of the coastline's most distinctive natural landmarks, Sail Rock, a striking rock formation rising from the sea. Its tall, slender shape resembles a sail reaching towards the sky, billowing in the wind.
The best time to visit the Conero Riviera
Choosing the right time to visit can make a significant difference to your travel experience.
During July and August, the Riviera comes alive with beach clubs, restaurants, tourist activities and local events. The most popular beaches, particularly those that are easy to reach, tend to attract larger crowds.
For a more peaceful stay, June and September are excellent alternatives, offering pleasant temperatures, generally favourable conditions for swimming and quieter villages with fewer visitors.
Spring, meanwhile, is an ideal season for exploring the area on foot, especially along the walking and hiking trails of Conero Regional Park.
If you're planning a weekend escape, two or three days can be enough to discover some of the main highlights. A longer stay, however, gives you the chance to explore at a more relaxed pace, with time to enjoy scenic trails, inland villages and the coastline itself.
